Once a Year

Ekingura First Purpose
Protection

Over a hundred years ago Ekin created his folding screen pictures that have been shown each summer since around the middle of last century.
Over this time the quality of the images have slowly deteriorated.

Folklore

Ekingura Second Purpose
Ekin Folklore

Ekin's desire to put his art on canvas was to capture how people lived during his time.
Ekin is famous for using a lot of “blood-red” colours in his art. Ekin believed that using such vibrant colours would protect local people from bad luck and evil spirits. To this day local residents believe his power of protecting the community still remains.

Connection

Ekingura Third Purpose
Preserving Our Community

The main desire of Akaoka Towns' people is to create a place where the legend of Ekin can be preserved and where further generations can experience a piece of local heritage and culture.
